Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $78,042.76, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, boosting the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward movement is attributed to improved risk sentiment following the extension of the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran by President Donald Trump, as well as gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's ascent has finally provided momentum traders with the breakthrough they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically invest when they observe evidence of an upward trend, and bitcoin's recent surge serves as a catalyst for potential further investment. According to analysts at Marex, the market's breakout from its previous range is significant, as it alters investor behavior and prompts sellers to reassess their strategies. On-chain indicators also suggest continued investor accumulation, which may lead to a supply shock. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. However, QCP Capital urges caution, citing the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which could indicate potential price volatility. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The path forward for bitcoin remains anchored to oil and policy, with a potential move lower in crude or clearer Fed signaling supporting risk. In the absence of these factors, markets may remain in a holding pattern, pricing uncertainty rather than resolution.
