Groundbreaking Quantum Attack on Cryptographic Tech Earns Researcher 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The potential threat of quantum attacks to Bitcoin's security has become more tangible with a recent breakthrough. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, equivalent to approximately $78,000, to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli for successfully breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement represents the largest public demonstration of its kind to date and has significant implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of crypto wallets, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, the use of quantum computers running Shor's algorithm challenges this assumption, potentially compromising the security of these systems. Although Lelli's result does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it underscores the need for vigilance and the development of quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions. The previous public demonstration of a quantum attack on elliptic curve cryptography was a 6-bit key break by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025. Lelli's achievement marks a substantial increase in the scale of such attacks, expanding the previous result by a factor of 512 in just seven months. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for launching a full-scale 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with a recent Google Research paper indicating that the cost could be below 500,000 physical qubits. This trend has significant implications for the security of wallets with publicly visible keys, with Project Eleven estimating that roughly 6.9 million bitcoin are potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks. In response, developers are exploring migration paths to quantum-safe address types, including the proposed Bitcoin Improvement Proposal BIP-360. The broader community, including Ethereum, Tron, StarkWare, and Ripple, is also working on post-quantum transition plans to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing.
