Jane Street Seeks Dismissal of Lawsuit Over UST-LUNA Collapse

Jane Street has filed a motion with a US court to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the Terraform Labs bankruptcy estate, contesting claims that the trading firm contributed to the 2022 collapse of the TerraUSD stablecoin and its associated token, Luna. The lawsuit, filed in January, alleges that Jane Street engaged in insider trading, utilizing non-public information from Terraform insiders to execute trades ahead of significant market moves, including large withdrawals from the Curve liquidity pool that preceded the UST's loss of its dollar peg. Jane Street denies these allegations, asserting that the case is an attempt to shift responsibility for the Terra ecosystem's failure, which erased approximately $40 billion in value within days. The firm argues that the core issues surrounding Terra's collapse have already been addressed in previous court cases, including criminal and civil proceedings against Terraform founder Do Kwon, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and wire fraud and is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence. Jane Street maintains that it had no involvement in Terraform's fraud scheme and that the lawsuit is an attempt to extract funds to compensate for Terraform's own misconduct. The court's decision on Jane Street's motion may influence how responsibility for the collapse is assigned and could have implications for the crypto sector.
