Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement, recognized with a 1 bitcoin bounty, demonstrates the rapid progress being made in this field. The breakthrough, made by Giancarlo Lelli, is 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration and has significant implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of these networks, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from a public key. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can potentially bypass this security measure. While this achievement does not immediately compromise the security of Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the need for the development of quantum-resistant cryptographic protocols. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resources required for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, making it essential for the cryptocurrency community to prepare for a post-quantum future. Several proposals, including BIP-360, have been put forward to address this challenge, and other blockchain networks, such as Ethereum and Ripple, are also exploring post-quantum transition plans.
