Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Prize for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology

The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin has become more tangible after an independent researcher, Giancarlo Lelli, won a 1 bitcoin prize for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This breakthrough, announced by quantum security startup Project Eleven, demonstrates a 512-times increase in the scale of the attack compared to the previous public demonstration in September 2025. The achievement is significant, but it does not mean that bitcoin's security is immediately at risk, as the cryptocurrency uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, which is substantially more complex than the 15-bit key that Lelli broke. Nevertheless, the result underscores the growing importance of addressing quantum security concerns in the cryptocurrency space. Elliptic curve cryptography, which is used to secure cryptocurrency transactions, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from a public key. However, quantum computers can potentially exploit this using Shor's algorithm, a quantum technique that challenges the underlying security assumptions. While Lelli's achievement does not pose an immediate threat to bitcoin, it highlights the need for the cryptocurrency community to develop and implement quantum-safe solutions, such as the proposed BIP-360, which would introduce quantum-safe address types. Other blockchain platforms, including Ethereum, Tron, StarkWare, and Ripple, have also published plans for post-quantum transitions.
