FTX Founder Drops Request for New Trial Due to Fairness Concerns

The founder of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, has formally retracted his request for a new trial, citing doubts about receiving an impartial hearing. Currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy related to the 2022 collapse of FTX, Bankman-Fried indicated that he might revisit the motion after the resolution of his direct appeal and a related petition for reassignment. The initial motion for a retrial was submitted by his mother, Barbara Fried, based on newly discovered evidence that could warrant a retrial. Bankman-Fried, who drafted the motion primarily on his own while in detention, stated that he may renew the request after the appeal process is concluded. The appeal is presently pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where his lawyer argued that the original trial was fundamentally flawed due to restrictions on the evidence Bankman-Fried could present to the jury.
