Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Address Quantum Computing Threat

While not all aspects of Bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers, the threat to ownership is very real. Bitcoin mining, which uses a type of math called hashing, is not at risk from quantum computers. However, the math that protects Bitcoin wallets, turning a secret private key into a public address, is a different story. A quantum algorithm called Shor's can potentially break this math, and a recent Google paper showed that this attack could be carried out with fewer resources than previously thought. Approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin, including those held by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are at risk due to exposed public keys. The 2021 Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem, as any Bitcoin spent since then has published the key protecting the remaining balance at that address. While there are some proposals to address the issue, such as adding new quantum-safe address types or installing a detection system, none have gained broad support from Bitcoin's core developers. Ethereum, on the other hand, has had a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and is making significant progress. The main challenge for Bitcoin is its decentralized nature and lack of a central authority, which makes it difficult to coordinate a mass upgrade. The question now is whether Bitcoin's network can come together to implement a solution before it's too late.
