Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $78,022.80, has broken through the $78,000 barrier, boosting the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward movement follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, also leading to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's ascent has given momentum traders the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically buy when they see evidence of an upward trend, and bitcoin's breakout could attract more buyers, further fueling the momentum. As noted by analysts at Marex, the market had been confined to a range between $65 and $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers have the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also suggest continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates that bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce, with supply down and volatility potentially increasing. However, QCP Capital urges caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having bounced back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. In the broader market, the chart shows bitcoin's daily price movements, with the price establishing a firm foothold above the 100-day average. This is a pivotal moment, as the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash to nearly $60,000. Now that the price has pierced through, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
