Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement has earned him a 1 bitcoin bounty, worth approximately $78,000, from quantum security startup Project Eleven. The breakthrough is significant, as it demonstrates the growing capabilities of quantum computers in challenging the underlying security of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which enables crypto wallets to prove fund ownership without revealing private keys, is being threatened by quantum computers running Shor's algorithm. Although Lelli's result does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result represents a 512-fold increase in just seven months. The implications are far-reaching, with an estimated 6.9 million bitcoin, approximately one-third of the total supply, potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks. As a result, developers are exploring migration paths, including the proposed BIP-360, to introduce quantum-safe address types and ensure the long-term security of cryptocurrencies.
