Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The swift emergence of AI agents is transforming online transactions, with crypto infrastructure naturally fitting into this new landscape, as noted by Coinbase's Jesse Pollak. Pollak remarked in an interview with CoinDesk that capabilities considered nearly impossible just nine months ago are now feasible due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents evolve, the need for native transaction methods becomes apparent. Agents, defined by and operating on software, require money to be represented as software, Pollak explained, emphasizing the need for AI systems to have the ability to transact autonomously. This has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI can independently pay for services such as data access, computing power, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will play a crucial role in this shift. The protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. According to Pollak, blockchain-based payments allow agents to make global transactions instantly and almost free of charge, simply by making a single API or smart contract call, thus bypassing traditional payment rails. Early signs of adoption are already visible, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having flowed through X402, the majority of which, about 95%, occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can directly access. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. He envisions a system where software can seamlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real time. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from people enhancing their capabilities with AI. He noted that top performers are now leveraging agents to further enhance their performance, describing workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the broader crypto space, the challenge remains adoption. Pollak argues that the solution lies not in better marketing but in making crypto invisible to the user. The idea is that it will be easier to promote crypto when it becomes an integral, unnoticed part of the user experience, rather than something that needs to be explicitly sold.
