Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Sounds Alarm on AI Control by Tech Giants
The cryptocurrency sector is on the cusp of a significant transformation driven by artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents will leverage crypto infrastructure to facilitate transactions, coordination, and verification on decentralized networks. He envisions a future where intelligent interfaces simplify user interactions with crypto systems, effectively positioning AI as an intermediary between humans and protocols. However, Lubin also cautioned that if AI infrastructure remains under the control of a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and transparency. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys offering, reflects this shift, with the wallet being reimagined as a user-controlled, AI-driven 'neobank.' Lubin anticipates the emergence of 'corporate chains' on Ethereum, where companies will seek greater control over their infrastructure, and assets will be issued on the base layer for enhanced durability. Stablecoins, while part of this transition, are seen as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems. Tokenization is expected to converge traditional finance with decentralized finance, yielding a more granular and programmable global economy. Lubin downplayed the long-term risks associated with quantum computing, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality as part of the platform's natural evolution.
