The future of blockchains is increasingly private, with a recent proposal by Tempo, a Stripe-backed payment blockchain, highlighting the need for private enterprise stablecoin transactions. This shift towards private networks marks a significant change from the traditional open-source technology that blockchains were built on. The question is no longer whether blockchains will be private, but rather what kind of privacy they will offer. Public chains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, have been successful in enabling secure and transparent transactions, but their lack of privacy has become a major obstacle for institutional adoption. The visibility of every wallet, balance, and transaction in real-time is a significant problem for financial markets, where confidentiality is essential. Tempo's solution, Zones, offers private parallel blockchains connected to the main network, where participants can transact privately, and the public can only see cryptographic proofs of validity. However, this model relies on trusting an intermediary, the Zone operator, to manage the private transactions. An alternative approach is to use zero-knowledge cryptography, which allows parties to prove the validity of a transaction without revealing the underlying data. This approach, used by ZK-native blockchains, offers verifiable privacy and eliminates the need for an intermediary. The choice between these two models has significant implications for the industry, as it determines the risk surface, compliance posture, and exposure to failure modes. The era of public-by-default blockchains is ending, and the industry must now decide on the type of privacy it wants to build, with significant consequences for the future of blockchain technology.
