Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The price of bitcoin (BTC) has surged past $78,000, bolstering the broader cryptocurrency market. This upward movement follows an improvement in risk sentiment after US President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, also leading to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, bitcoin's breakthrough has given momentum traders the signal they were waiting for to potentially drive further growth. Momentum traders typically invest when they identify an upward trend, and bitcoin's recent performance could attract more buyers, thereby increasing momentum. Analysts at Marex note that breaking out of the $65-$75 range is significant as it alters market behavior, forcing sellers to reassess their strategies and providing momentum buyers with the confirmation they needed. On-chain data also supports this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution, pointing to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm suggests that crypto trends are currently influenced by oil prices and interest rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, security risks in DeFi remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The path forward for bitcoin remains tied to oil prices and policy, with a potential move lower in crude or clearer Fed signaling likely to support risk, otherwise markets may remain in a holding pattern.
