Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Domination by Big Tech
The next significant milestone for the cryptocurrency industry will be driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, the co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of Consensys. In a recent interview, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents can facilitate transactions, coordinate, and verify each other on decentralized networks, leveraging cryptocurrency infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the concept that blockchain technology is designed for machine intelligences, but he does not envision humans being replaced. Instead, he believes that increasingly sophisticated interfaces will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with cryptocurrency systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as the intermediate layer between people and protocols. However, this vision also carries risks, as the concentration of AI infrastructure among large technology firms could pose significant problems, according to Lubin. He stressed that decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other in transparent environments. As part of this broader shift, products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect these changes. Lubin described the wallet as a new type of neobank that users own and control, marking a transition toward a personal money operating system. AI-powered agents could act on behalf of users, managing assets and executing transactions within a growing decentralized economy. Lubin also pointed to structural changes within the Ethereum ecosystem, predicting the rise of corporate chains as companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he expects assets to be issued on Ethereum's base layer for durability, he noted that stablecoins are a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Ultimately, Lubin envisions a convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance, resulting in a more granular and programmable global economy. Regarding longer-term technical risks like quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
