Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The bitcoin price, currently at $77,566.42, has surpassed $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This development comes on the heels of improved risk sentiment following the extension of the ceasefire between the US and Iran by President Donald Trump, also prompting gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, momentum traders have finally received the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically enter the market when there is evidence of an upward trend, and bitcoin's recent breakout serves as a clear indication of this. As a result, additional buyers may enter the market, further fueling the momentum. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range has significant implications as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling rallies above $74 must now reassess their positions, while momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a solid foundation to build upon. On-chain indicators also support this outlook, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could potentially lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange pointed out that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more being transferred to long-term holders, is contributing to increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital is urging caution due to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently closely tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million just days after the KelpDAO incident. The path forward for bitcoin remains closely tied to oil prices and policy decisions, with a potential move lower in crude or clearer signaling from the Fed likely to support risk appetite. Absent these factors, markets may remain in a holding pattern, pricing in uncertainty rather than resolution. The current price of bitcoin has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, a pivotal development that typically signals strengthening bullish momentum. With the focus now shifting to the 200-day average at $85,900, momentum traders are likely to continue driving the market upwards.
