Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal as Price Surpasses $78,000
The bitcoin price, currently at $77,630.64, has broken through the $78,000 barrier, driving the broader cryptocurrency market upwards. This surge follows improved risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, also leading to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, bitcoin's ascent has given momentum traders the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically buy when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout could attract more buyers, further boosting momentum. As stated by the first law of motion, an object in motion remains so until an external force intervenes, a principle that may apply to financial markets as well. Analysts at Marex noted, 'The market spent months capped between $65 and $75. Breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers waiting for confirmation have something to support their positions.' On-chain indicators also suggest the same trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges has dropped to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant, indicating continued investor accumulation that could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated, 'Bitcoin supply on exchanges continues to decrease, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC moving to long-term holders, and liquidity tightening. Bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce, and reduced supply typically means increased volatility.' However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm notes that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate outlooks. 'The path forward remains tied to oil and policy. A decrease in crude oil prices or clearer Fed signaling would support risk, but without these factors, markets are likely to remain in a holding pattern, pricing uncertainty rather than resolution,' QCP Capital said. WTI crude futures are currently trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. In the broader market, DeFi security risks persist due to ongoing hacks. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. The chart shows bitcoin's daily price movements, with the 100-day and 200-day average prices indicated. Bitcoin's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is crucial as it previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash to nearly $60,000. Now that the price has broken through, focus shifts to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900, signaling a potential strengthening of bullish momentum.
