Although this breakthrough does not immediately compromise the security of bitcoin, it underscores the growing concern over the potential risks posed by quantum computing to the cryptocurrency's underlying elliptic curve cryptography. The current security standard for bitcoin is 256-bit, which is significantly more complex than the 15-bit key broken by Lelli. The previous public demonstration, which took place in September 2025, involved a 6-bit key, and Lelli's achievement represents a substantial increase in complexity.
