Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The swift emergence of AI agents is transforming online payment landscapes, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a crucial role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was nearly impossible just nine months ago has become entirely feasible due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents evolve, the need for native transaction methods becomes increasingly apparent. Pollak emphasized that since agents are defined by and operate through software, they require monetary transactions to be software-based as well. This shift is driving interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that a key component of this framework will be x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase and collaborators like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, which enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make a single API or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, almost instantly, and at virtually no cost, according to Pollak. Early adoption is already evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through X402, the majority of which, about 95%, occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention, allowing agents to operate freely. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals enhancing their capabilities with AI. He described top performers using agents to further elevate their performance, highlighting workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the main challenge remains adoption, with Pollak arguing that the solution lies not in better marketing but in making crypto more invisible and seamless to the user experience. 'It will be much easier to promote crypto when people don't need to be told about it; they just experience it,' he said.
