Parasite Mining Pool Strikes Again, Finding Its Second Bitcoin Block
A groundbreaking bitcoin mining pool, Parasite Pool, has achieved a significant milestone by mining its second block, demonstrating the effectiveness of its distinctive hybrid model. This approach, which diverges from traditional pay-per-share and pure lottery systems, has now proven its viability twice. On Friday, the pool mined block 945,601, approximately 48 days after its first block at #938,713 in late February. The block contained 7,398 transactions and 0.002 BTC in fees, with bitcoin trading at $76,213 at the time. The pool's hybrid model operates by awarding the winning miner 1 BTC outright, while distributing the remaining 2.125 BTC plus fees proportionally among all participants based on their shares submitted since the previous block. Notably, participation in the pool is free, and payouts are facilitated through the Lightning Network. The mining process, which involves computers competing to solve a cryptographic puzzle every 10 minutes, is crucial for securing bitcoin. The winner of this competition earns the right to add the next block of transactions to the blockchain and receives a reward, currently valued at approximately $238,000. The mining landscape is dominated by industrial operators with large-scale facilities, but Parasite Pool is specifically designed for home miners. Founded by ZK Shark, the creator of the Ordinal Maxi Biz NFT collection on Bitcoin, Parasite Pool offers an alternative to traditional solo pools like CKpool, which pay the full block reward minus a 2% fee to the finder. However, the statistical reality is that most participants in such pools never find a block. Parasite Pool's innovative approach splits the difference, preserving the lottery-style payday while ensuring a steady flow of satoshis to participants between blocks. The pool's second block is more significant than the first, as it has retained hashrate through the 48-day gap between payouts, and its proportional distribution mechanics have been validated twice. Currently, Parasite Pool's hashrate stands at 52 petahashes per second, accounting for roughly 0.005% of bitcoin's estimated 1-zetahash network hashrate. The success of Parasite Pool and other small-scale mining operations, such as a 230 terahash-per-second home miner who won a $210,000 reward, suggests a growing trend in the mining landscape. A third block found within the next two months would further solidify the case for Parasite Pool's hybrid model, while a prolonged drought would indicate that the first two blocks were exceptional cases.
