World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most significant upgrade to the World ID system, aiming to establish a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul, announced in San Francisco, targets the growing concern over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online by enhancing authentication, payments, and internet services. Altman is also known for his work on OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World ID system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to verify an individual's humanity through facial and iris scans, generating a unique cryptographic code. This code is then anonymized and distributed across a network to confirm the user's uniqueness without revealing their identity. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly.
