Sam Bankman-Fried Drops Request for New Trial, Citing Concerns Over Fairness

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has formally withdrawn his request for a retrial, expressing concerns that he may not receive a fair hearing. Currently serving a 25-year sentence for multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy related to FTX's collapse in 2022, Bankman-Fried indicated that he might renew his motion for a new trial after the outcome of his direct appeal and a related request for the case to be reassigned are determined. The initial motion for a retrial was submitted by his mother, Barbara Fried, who cited the emergence of new evidence as justification for a retrial. Bankman-Fried drafted the motion himself while in detention, with minimal assistance, and stated that he may refile the motion after his appeal is decided. His appeal is currently pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where his lawyer argued that the original trial was unfair due to limitations on the evidence Bankman-Fried could present to the jury.
