Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The perceived threat of quantum attacks to Bitcoin's security has become more tangible, following a recent breakthrough by independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli was awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, by quantum security startup Project Eleven for successfully breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement represents a substantial leap forward, being 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration in September 2025. Elliptic curve cryptography is fundamental to the security of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, as it enables wallets to prove control over funds without revealing their private keys. However, quantum computers, utilizing algorithms such as Shor's algorithm, pose a significant threat to this security by potentially deriving private keys from their public counterparts. Lelli's breakthrough, while notable, does not immediately jeopardize Bitcoin's security, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, far exceeding the 15-bit key broken in this experiment. The implications of this achievement are more about the rapid advancement in quantum computing capabilities and the decreasing gap between theoretical attacks and practical demonstrations. The previous public break of a 6-bit key by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025 has been significantly surpassed, indicating a rapid progression in the field. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing, with a recent Google Research paper estimating the cost to be below 500,000 physical qubits.
