Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Cautions Against AI Control by Tech Giants
According to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and Ethereum co-founder, the next significant turning point for crypto will be driven by artificial intelligence. In a recent conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that autonomous or semi-autonomous agents will be able to transact, coordinate, and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto rails as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin, who is set to speak at Consensus Miami 2026, expressed his support for the idea that blockchain is suited for machine intelligences but does not envision humans being replaced. Instead, he believes that increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as the intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, this vision also comes with risks, as Lubin warned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among large tech firms, it could lead to trouble. He argued that decentralized systems and cryptography are crucial in ensuring accountability, allowing machines to 'check on one another' in transparent and verifiable environments. As part of this broader shift, products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect the change. Lubin stated that the wallet is being rebuilt as a 'new kind of neobank that you own and control,' marking a transition toward a 'personal money operating system.' AI-powered agents could act on behalf of users, managing assets, executing transactions, and navigating a growing decentralized economy. 'You can walk around with your personal financial system in your pocket,' he said. Lubin also pointed to structural changes across the Ethereum ecosystem, expecting 'corporate chains' to become more common as companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he believes assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer, he noted that stablecoins are a 'stepping stone' toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Over time, he expects growth in decentralized collateral to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. On tokenization, Lubin suggested that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. The result, he said, will be a more granular and programmable global economy. Despite these shifts, Lubin adopted a measured tone on longer-term technical risks like quantum computing, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
