The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key, a crucial component of cryptographic security. This achievement, facilitated by quantum startup Project Eleven, has earned the researcher a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000. Although this breakthrough does not immediately compromise the security of major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, it underscores the growing need for quantum-resistant solutions. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of crypto wallets, relies on the impracticality of deriving a private key from its public counterpart.
