Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $77,225.74, has surged past $78,000, thereby bolstering the broader cryptocurrency market. This uptrend is attributed to improved risk sentiment following U.S. President Donald Trump's extension of the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's ascent has finally provided momentum traders with the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is confirmed, and bitcoin's recent breakout could attract more buyers, thereby amplifying the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market's breakout from the $65 to $75 range is significant as it alters market behavior, prompting sellers to reassess their strategies and giving momentum buyers the confirmation they needed. On-chain indicators also suggest continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This trend suggests that bitcoin is becoming increasingly scarce, which could lead to increased volatility. However, QCP Capital has urged caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which could indicate a potential price drop. The firm also notes that crypto trends are currently tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having bounced from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks, as evidenced by the recent drain of over $3 million from the Sui-based Volo protocol. The path forward for bitcoin remains anchored to oil prices and policy, with a move lower in crude or clearer Fed signaling potentially supporting risk. In the absence of these factors, markets may remain in a holding pattern, pricing uncertainty rather than resolution. Bitcoin's daily price movements have established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a pivotal development, as this average previously capped the bounce in January. The price has now pierced through this level, typically signaling a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
