The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to the World ID system, labeled as 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns within the tech industry regarding bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. The upgrade focuses on authentication, payments, and internet services. Altman is also known for his involvement with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World ID system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity. Users must visit an Orb in person, where their face and iris are scanned to generate a unique cryptographic code. The images are deleted post-processing, and only anonymized fragments of the code are sent across a distributed network to verify the individual's uniqueness. The result is a credential that proves someone's humanity online without disclosing their identity or personal data. However, some critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on enhanced privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. World is expanding its integrations with consumer platforms such as Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is rolling out tools to combat scalper bots in ticket reservations. The company is also working with Zoom on a feature to verify meeting participants' humanity and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. Additionally, World is developing tooling for developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents, enabling sensitive actions and agent-based commerce. The goal is to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data, with collaborations including Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase.
