US Regulatory Body Takes New York to Court Over Prediction Market Dispute

In its latest move to assert nationwide authority, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission has filed a lawsuit against New York, seeking to protect its regulatory oversight of prediction market firms. This development comes after New York recently sued major cryptocurrency exchanges, alleging violations of state gambling laws. The CFTC maintains that federal law grants it exclusive jurisdiction over commodity futures, options, and swaps, thereby preempting state law. However, a coalition of state attorneys general has countered that this stance undermines their ability to safeguard citizens. The CFTC's chairman has made this initiative a priority, with similar lawsuits filed against other states. The regulator argues that its authority is being challenged by state lawsuits targeting event contracts and prediction markets. In response, New York officials stated that they are enforcing state gambling laws to protect consumers, and will continue to defend these laws in court.
