Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Companies
The next significant turning point for the crypto industry is expected to come from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, the CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. Lubin expressed his belief that autonomous agents can facilitate transactions and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He will be speaking at Consensus Miami 2026 next month. Lubin is sympathetic to the idea that blockchain technology is particularly suited for machine intelligences but does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, he envisions increasingly intelligent interfaces that simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, this vision also comes with risks, as the concentration of AI infrastructure among large tech firms could pose significant problems. Lubin emphasized the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other in transparent environments. The evolution of products like MetaMask reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a user-controlled, AI-powered "neobank" that can manage assets and execute transactions on behalf of users. Lubin also discussed the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, expecting them to become more common as companies seek higher throughput and greater control. He believes assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability. Stablecoins are seen as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems, and tokenization is expected to bring about a convergence of traditional and decentralized finance, resulting in a more granular and programmable global economy. Regarding quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that while it is not an immediate concern, Ethereum developers have been preparing for it as part of the network's natural evolution.
