Time Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Computing Threat

Not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers. The process of mining new blocks and the rule that new coins can only be created through mining would remain intact. However, ownership is at risk due to the type of math used to protect bitcoin wallets. A quantum algorithm called Shor's can collapse the gap in this math, potentially allowing attackers to access wallets. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin are at risk, including those held by the pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. While some proposals have been put forth to address the issue, bitcoin's lack of formal governance and development culture may hinder the implementation of effective solutions. Ethereum, on the other hand, has a formal quantum-resistant program in place, which could serve as a model for bitcoin. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to migrate to quantum-safe addresses and protect its users' coins.
