Quantum Computing Threat to Crypto on the Horizon, According to Coinbase Advisory Board

A newly released report commissioned by Coinbase issues a cautious yet urgent warning: while quantum computing does not pose an immediate threat to cryptocurrency, the industry cannot afford to delay its preparations. The 50-page paper, authored by a prominent advisory board of cryptographers and academics, stresses that today's blockchains remain secure, but the emergence of a fault-tolerant quantum computer that could break widely used encryption is a growing concern. Recent months have seen increased mainstream attention to quantum risk, with Google researchers suggesting that a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could potentially break Bitcoin's cryptography. In response, major crypto ecosystems have begun outlining their strategies, including the Ethereum Foundation's proposal for new digital signatures safe against quantum computers and Solana's experimentation with quantum-resistant wallet designs. Although current quantum machines are far from capable of cracking the cryptography underpinning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other networks, the report cautions against complacency, emphasizing that the timeline for a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer is uncertain but clearly on the horizon. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology recommends migrating to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035, a timeline that may prove optimistic. The report highlights the challenges of transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography, including increased blockchain data costs and reduced throughput, as well as usability issues such as migrating millions of wallets. Rather than a single solution, the report outlines multiple transition strategies, including hybrid systems that combine existing cryptography with post-quantum updates. The authors recommend flexible approaches that avoid sacrificing current security or performance while enabling a rapid upgrade later, concluding that the time to begin preparing for the quantum computing threat is now.
