Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments

The emergence of AI agents is transforming online transactions, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible has become achievable due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transaction capabilities is becoming increasingly apparent. Pollak emphasized that AI agents, being software-defined, require software-based payment solutions. This has led to a growing interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously facilitate transactions for services such as data access, computation, and travel bookings. Pollak expressed his enthusiasm for x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase in collaboration with Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, which enables on-demand API payments without the need for traditional billing systems or subscriptions. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute transactions globally, instantly, and at a negligible cost, according to Pollak. The x402 protocol has already gained significant traction, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed to date. Notably, about 95% of these transactions have occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access a wide range of services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. He envisions a system where software can effortlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time. While the concept of fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses is beginning to take shape, Pollak believes that the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. He noted that top performers are now leveraging AI agents to further enhance their performance, resulting in workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. Pollak argued that the solution lies not in better marketing, but rather in making crypto more invisible and seamless to use. He suggested that it will become easier to promote crypto once it is no longer necessary to explicitly explain it to users, and instead, they can simply experience its benefits.
