Trump Administration's DOJ Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Federal Reserve Nominee

The US Department of Justice, under President Donald Trump, has relinquished its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, potentially smoothing the path for Trump's nominee, Kevin Warsh, to take the reins. Warsh, who has substantial personal wealth, including assets in the cryptocurrency sector, is awaiting a final Senate vote following his confirmation hearing. Trump, who has consistently criticized Powell for maintaining high interest rates, selected Warsh to address this issue. However, Republican Senator Thom Tillis had vowed to block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ pursued its investigation into Powell regarding cost overruns in a Fed building project. The DOJ dropped the probe, and the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, stated that the Fed's inspector general will examine the matter and issue a report. Following this development, the likelihood of Warsh's confirmation before May 15 surged from approximately 30% to over 80%. Pirro noted that she expects a comprehensive report soon and is confident that the outcome will resolve the questions that led to the investigation. Trump's ability to install his preferred candidate at the helm of the Federal Reserve would not only expand his influence over US monetary policy but also provide him with more allies on the Fed board, which makes decisions on financial policy, including regulations governing the crypto industry and stablecoin issuers. The investigation's closure may enable the Republican-majority Senate to expedite Warsh's confirmation, who during his hearing, asserted that he would act independently of the White House. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the move, stating that it is an attempt to clear the path for Warsh's confirmation, while the administration continues to pursue Fed Governor Lisa Cook in court. Warren argued that the Justice Department's announcement is an attempt to threaten the independence of the Fed. Senator Tillis expressed his support for Warsh, calling him a 'great nominee' and stating that he would vote in favor of Warsh once the DOJ drops its investigation into Powell.
