Bitcoin Faces Looming Quantum Threat: Can It Act in Time to Protect 6.9 Million Coins?
The bitcoin network is under pressure to address the looming threat of quantum computers, which could potentially drain 6.9 million BTC, including those held by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, as the hashing process used in mining is resistant to quantum computing. However, the ownership of bitcoins, protected by a different type of mathematics, is at risk. Quantum computers can solve the complex mathematical problems that secure bitcoin wallets, potentially allowing hackers to steal funds. The issue is exacerbated by the fact that roughly 6.9 million bitcoins, or about one-third of all mined coins, are stored in wallets with publicly visible keys, making them easy targets for quantum attacks. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently expanded the problem by publishing the keys of any bitcoin spent since its activation. While Ethereum, a competing blockchain, has a formal quantum-resistant program in place, bitcoin developers have yet to propose a concrete solution. Two proposals, BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, have been put forth, but neither has gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a centralized authority and governance process in bitcoin makes it challenging to implement effective solutions. The network's development culture, which prioritizes stability and rare, hard changes to the protocol, may hinder the coordination required to address the quantum threat. As a result, the migration of 6.9 million exposed coins requires difficult decisions, including whether to freeze old address formats, allow exposed coins to move to new quantum-safe addresses, or set a migration deadline. The fate of Satoshi's coins, which have remained untouched since the network's early days, is a prime example of the challenges posed by the quantum threat. With the timeline for quantum computing advancements uncertain, bitcoin developers must decide whether to act now or wait until the threat becomes more pressing.
