Unlocking the Potential of AI Agents in Cryptocurrency
The rise of AI agents has led to the emergence of 'agentic finance', where machines execute financial transactions, making cryptocurrency the essential financial backend. This shift is driven by the increasing adoption of AI agents, with 79% of companies already using them in some form. AI agents are evolving from advisory roles to execution roles, with the ability to plan, decide, and act on predefined parameters, including financial transactions. The result is a new primitive where AI agents execute financial actions within predefined rules, such as limits, permissions, and goals. Agentic finance can be understood in three layers: the agentic commerce layer, which focuses on discovery and decision-making; the agentic payments layer, which handles execution; and the asset management layer, which represents the full stack. Crypto is increasingly becoming the infrastructure for autonomous systems, rather than just an asset class, offering AI agents access to programmable, always-on money, instant and global settlement, and permissionless access to funds. Early implementations of AI agents are already visible, with machine-to-machine payments, autonomous commerce, and trading agents being widely deployed. However, despite the momentum, there are risks and limitations, particularly around security, authorization, liability, and regulatory treatment. As the technology continues to grow and mature, it is essential to build trust for users through regulatory clarity, safeguarding user funds and interests, and demonstrating that AI augments rather than replaces fiduciary duty.
