Ethereum Co-Founder Warns of AI Risks and Highlights Blockchain Evolution
The next significant development in the crypto space is likely to emerge from artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, the CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin noted that autonomous agents can engage in transactions, coordination, and verification on decentralized networks, leveraging crypto as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He expressed sympathy for the idea that blockchain technology is suited for machine intelligences but does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, he envisioned increasingly intelligent interfaces that simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. This vision, however, comes with risks, particularly if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, which could lead to trouble, as per Lubin's warning. He emphasized the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other's actions in transparent environments. Products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect this shift, with Lubin describing it as a new kind of user-controlled neobank, part of a transition toward a personal money operating system. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the decentralized economy on behalf of users. Lubin also pointed to structural changes in the Ethereum ecosystem, including the rise of corporate chains, which are expected to become more common as institutions seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He advocated for issuing assets on Ethereum's base layer for durability, even if they are later used across other networks. Stablecoins, while part of the transition, are seen as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems, with current models still reliant on centralized issuers. Over time, Lubin expects growth in decentralized collateral to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. On tokenization, he suggested that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems, resulting in a more granular and programmable global economy. Despite these developments, Lubin adopted a measured tone on technical risks like quantum computing, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this challenge as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
