The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to date, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for individuals, businesses, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns within the tech industry regarding the increasing presence of bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The update features a redesigned architecture focused on enhancing privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage their credentials and authenticate across various platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with consumer platforms like Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is working with Zoom to develop a 'Deep Face' feature that verifies meeting participants' identities. Additionally, World is collaborating with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements, and is rolling out new tooling for developers to attach credentials to agents, enabling agent-based commerce tied to verified individuals.
