London Aims to Lure Crypto Giant Bybit from UAE with Promises of Innovation
In a bid to replicate the UAE's thriving crypto scene, UK economic development officials have invited Bybit's leadership to London, touting the country's eagerness to attract major businesses and create jobs. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou revealed that the UK is keen to establish itself as a crypto hub, with discussions focusing on forthcoming pro-crypto regulation. Founded in 2018 by Zhou, Bybit relocated its headquarters to Dubai from Singapore in 2022 and is now the second-largest crypto exchange, according to CoinGecko. The presence of crypto giants like Bybit and Binance in the UAE has drawn smaller companies to the region, a phenomenon the UK hopes to replicate. Zhou's meetings with the Financial Conduct Authority and the House of Lords coincided with UK Fintech Week and a Treasury plan to overhaul payment systems using stablecoins and tokenization. The invitation's timing is noteworthy, given the UAE's recent instability due to the U.S.-Israel war, which has prompted an exodus of residents and tourists. The UK government aims to capitalize on this situation and win back businesses that have fled to the UAE, with Zhou stating that 'now is good timing' for the UK to make its move.
