US Authorities Arrest Green Beret Over Alleged $400,000 Betting Scandal on Venezuela Operation
The US Department of Justice has taken a Green Beret into custody for allegedly exploiting classified information to place wagers on a military operation in Venezuela, which led to the detention of former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. According to the indictment, Van Dyke, a master sergeant with the US Army Special Forces, used his knowledge of the impending raid to place $33,000 in bets on Polymarket, ultimately winning around $400,000. The DOJ has charged Van Dyke with unlawfully using confidential government information for personal gain, theft of non-public government information, and fraud. US Attorney Jay Clayton stated that Van Dyke's actions constitute 'clear insider trading' and are illegal under federal law. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is also pursuing an insider trading complaint against Van Dyke. Following the raid, Van Dyke allegedly withdrew his winnings, converted them to a stablecoin, and transferred the funds to a foreign cryptocurrency vault before moving them into a brokerage account. The indictment claims that Van Dyke attempted to conceal his identity by asking Polymarket to delete his account and changing his email address. Polymarket has since cooperated with the DOJ's investigation, stating that they referred the matter to the authorities after identifying a user trading on classified government information. US President Donald Trump has expressed disapproval of the use of prediction markets, stating that the world has become 'somewhat of a casino' and that he does not conceptually favor such activities.
