Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has taken a significant step closer to reality. Quantum security startup Project Eleven has awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty to researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks a 512-fold increase over the previous public demonstration in September 2025 and is valued at approximately $78,000. While this breakthrough does not pose an immediate threat to bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapidly advancing capabilities of quantum computers in attacking cryptographic systems. Elliptic curve cryptography is a crucial component of cryptocurrency wallets, enabling them to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers using Shor's algorithm can potentially derive private keys from public ones, compromising the security of these systems. Lelli's achievement demonstrates the growing feasibility of quantum attacks on real-world cryptographic products, sparking concerns about the potential risks to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with some predictions placing the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. As a result, cryptocurrency developers are exploring migration paths to quantum-safe address types, such as BIP-360, to mitigate these risks. The broader community is taking notice, with Ethereum, Tron, StarkWare, and Ripple also publishing post-quantum transition plans. While 15 bits is still far from the 256-bit security used by bitcoin, this breakthrough serves as a warning that the threat of quantum attacks is becoming increasingly real.
