The Lightning Network is Not Irreparably Flawed

Udi Wertheimer's recent post claiming the Lightning Network is irreparably broken in a post-quantum world has sparked concern among businesses that rely on the network. However, this assertion deserves a more nuanced response. Wertheimer, a respected Bitcoin developer, raises a legitimate concern about the potential threat of quantum computers to the network's cryptographic systems. Nevertheless, the notion that Lightning is 'helplessly broken' is misleading and does not accurately reflect the situation. The Bitcoin development community is actively working on addressing the potential risks associated with quantum computers, and businesses should be aware of the facts before making decisions about their infrastructure. The threat posed by quantum computers is more specific and conditional than initially suggested. Lightning channels are protected by a hash while they are open, and funding transactions use P2WSH, which hides the raw public keys onchain. The realistic attack window is narrower, typically occurring during a force-close when a commitment transaction is broadcast onchain. In a post-quantum scenario, an attacker would need to actively solve a complex mathematical problem within a fixed window to steal funds. This is a timed race against an attacker, rather than a passive drain on every Lightning wallet. Furthermore, cryptographically relevant quantum computers do not yet exist, and the gap between current technology and what is needed to break Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography is substantial. The development community is not idle, with multiple post-quantum proposals being developed, including SHRINCS, SHRIMPS, BIP-360, and others. The correct framing is that Lightning, like the rest of Bitcoin, requires a base-layer upgrade to become quantum-resistant, and this work is underway. Businesses building on Lightning today should be aware of the potential risks and the ongoing efforts to address them, rather than abandoning the network based on theoretical future threats. The Lightning Network is not irreparably flawed; it faces the same long-horizon cryptographic challenge as the entire digital financial system, and its development community is actively working to address it.
