Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
A recent quantum attack on cryptographic technology has brought the theoretical threat to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies one step closer to reality. Independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli has been awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty for successfully breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks a 512-fold increase over the previous public demonstration in September 2025. The bounty, worth approximately $78,000, was awarded by quantum security startup Project Eleven as part of its Q-Day Prize. While this breakthrough does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapidly evolving landscape of quantum attacks on cryptographic technologies. Elliptic curve cryptography is the foundation of secure transactions in cryptocurrencies, enabling wallets to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can potentially compromise this security by deriving private keys from public ones. Lelli's achievement demonstrates the growing capabilities of quantum attacks, with significant implications for the future of cryptocurrencies. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result represents a substantial leap forward.
