Major Upgrade Unveiled by Sam Altman's World Project to Combat Deepfakes and Bots
The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most significant upgrade to date, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This development is in response to growing concerns within the tech industry about bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. Altman is also known for his involvement with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The images are then deleted, and only anonymized code fragments are sent across a distributed network to verify the individual's unique identity without revealing personal data. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms, aiming to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as social media login. The company is introducing various integrations to embed its identity layer across consumer platforms, including partnerships with Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign. These integrations include a 'verified human' badge for Tinder users and a 'Concert Kit' to combat scalper bots. World is also working with gaming and online communities, as well as exploring enterprise use cases, such as verifying meeting participants on Zoom and incorporating proof-of-human checks into digital agreements with Docusign. Additionally, the company is rolling out 'AgentKit' to enable developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce. According to Sam Altman, co-founder of World, 'World ID is on the way to being a real human network for the internet.'
