Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The price of Bitcoin, currently at $77,633.69, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, driving growth in the broader cryptocurrency market. This surge occurred amid improved risk sentiment following the extension of the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran by President Donald Trump, with stock index futures also experiencing gains. After weeks of fluctuation between $65,000 and $75,000, Bitcoin's ascent has provided momentum traders with the catalyst they were anticipating. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is confirmed, and Bitcoin's breakout serves as a green signal for potential buyers, potentially leading to increased momentum. As Newton's first law of motion states, an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an external force, a principle that may have implications for financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to a range of $65 to $75 for months, and breaking out of this range is significant as it alters market behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must reassess, while momentum buyers now have a basis for investment. On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This suggests continued investor accumulation, which could result in a supply shock. Delta Exchange noted that the decreasing Bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and increased movement to long-term holders, is leading to tightened liquidity and increased scarcity. However, QCP Capital has urged caution, citing the persistent relative richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm noted that crypto trends appear to be linked to oil prices and interest rate outlooks. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the proliferation of hacks, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The chart illustrates Bitcoin's daily price movements, with the price establishing a firm foothold above the 100-day average. This is a pivotal development, as the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash. Now that the price has broken through, the focus shifts to the 200-day average, currently at $85,900.
