Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more real with a recent breakthrough. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty to researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement is 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration and has significant implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography is used to secure funds in crypto wallets, and quantum computers have the potential to derive private encryption keys from public counterparts, posing a major threat. While Lelli's result is a significant milestone, it does not mean that Bitcoin is close to being compromised, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security. However, the attack does demonstrate the rapidly advancing capabilities of quantum computers and highlights the need for post-quantum transition plans, which are being developed by Bitcoin and other blockchain platforms.
