Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its busiest quarter on record, with its native token's price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, exceeding the 200 million threshold for the first time. This marks a significant increase from the 90 million transactions recorded in 2023 and the 100-120 million transactions per quarter in 2024. Ethereum's smart contract system enables the automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, recording actions such as sending ether, interacting with contracts, or transferring tokens on the blockchain. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025 and has continued to grow, with Q1 2026 seeing a 43% increase from Q4 2025. Despite this growth, the native token ether has declined over 50% from its August 2025 high. The majority of traffic is driven by Layer 2 networks, which provide cheaper transactions and batch them for settlement on the main chain. Stablecoins have also seen significant adoption, with a record $180 billion in supply on Ethereum, accounting for around 60% of the global stablecoin market. While this growth may mask base-layer fee pressure, it suggests a potential opportunity for traders and indicates a multi-year recovery in Ethereum's usage.
