World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to date, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, businesses, and AI systems. This overhaul is in response to growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for facial and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The update focuses on enhancing privacy, security, and usability, featuring a redesigned architecture, account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign, to embed its identity layer and combat issues like scalper bots and deepfakes. New tooling, such as 'AgentKit,' will enable developers to attach credentials proving human presence to agents, facilitating sensitive actions and agent-based commerce tied to verified individuals.
