Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as evidenced by the recent accomplishment of Giancarlo Lelli, who was awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty by Project Eleven for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key using publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement, valued at approximately $78,000, represents the largest public demonstration of its kind, sparking concerns about the potential vulnerability of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underlies the security of crypto wallets, relies on the impracticality of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers, leveraging Shor's algorithm, pose a challenge to this assumption. Although Lelli's breakthrough does not immediately jeopardize Bitcoin, which employs 256-bit elliptic curve security, it underscores the rapidly advancing field of quantum computing and its potential implications for the future of cryptocurrency. The previous public demonstration, a 6-bit break by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025, was eclipsed by Lelli's result, which expanded the search space by a factor of 512 in just seven months. As the resource requirements for quantum attacks continue to decrease, the barrier to executing them in practice also diminishes, prompting concerns about the security of wallets with publicly visible keys. In response, developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types, to mitigate the potential risks associated with quantum computing.
