Ethereum Co-Founder Warns of AI Control Risks by Big Tech Firms
According to Consensys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, the next significant development in crypto will be driven by artificial intelligence. In a recent interview, Lubin stated that autonomous agents can perform transactions, coordinate, and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin expressed sympathy for the idea that blockchain technology is suited for machine intelligences but does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, he envisions increasingly intelligent interfaces that will simplify complexity, allowing users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs. In this scenario, AI acts as the intermediary layer between people and protocols, which comes with risks if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among large tech firms. To mitigate these risks, Lubin emphasized the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability. He also discussed the evolution of products like MetaMask, which is being rebuilt as a 'personal money operating system' that users own and control. This system will enable AI-powered agents to manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy. Lubin also pointed to structural changes in the Ethereum ecosystem, including the rise of 'corporate chains' as companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He believes that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability and that stablecoins are a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Regarding tokenization, Lubin suggested that traditional finance and decentralized finance are converging, combining centuries of financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems. This convergence will result in a more granular and programmable global economy. Lubin also addressed the topic of quantum computing, stating that while it is not an immediate concern, Ethereum developers have been preparing for it for years and see it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
