Strategy Surpasses BlackRock's IBIT in Bitcoin Holdings Following Strategic Buying Spree
Following a significant buying spree during the bear market, Strategy (MSTR) has amassed a bitcoin portfolio worth $77,619.71, surpassing BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) for the first time since Q2 2024. With its latest purchase of 34,164 BTC, MSTR now holds a total of 815,061 BTC, exceeding IBIT's 802,824 BTC by over 12,000 BTC. Although the difference may seem minimal in relative terms, it holds symbolic significance given IBIT's remarkable growth since its launch, becoming the fastest ETF to reach $70 billion in assets. Notably, MSTR has leveraged financial engineering, including at-the-market equity issuance and perpetual preferred securities, to fuel its bitcoin accumulation, whereas IBIT operates as a passive spot ETF tracking bitcoin's price without leverage or corporate risk. This fundamental difference has led to distinct performance, with IBIT gaining around 55% since its January 2024 listing, while MSTR has risen approximately 250%, driven by its leveraged structure. MSTR's accelerated accumulation during the market downturn, adding nearly 80,000 BTC in 2026, has been instrumental in its success, with the perpetual preferred equity STRC serving as a key differentiator and scalable source of capital.
