According to a 50-page paper commissioned by Coinbase, the emergence of a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of breaking widely used encryption is becoming increasingly plausible. Although today's blockchains remain secure, experts stress that preparation is key to mitigating potential risks. The report, authored by a panel of prominent cryptographers and academics, emphasizes that the timeline for the development of such a computer is uncertain but clearly on the horizon. Google researchers have already estimated that a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could potentially break Bitcoin's cryptography, prompting major crypto ecosystems to start mapping out their responses. The Ethereum Foundation has proposed new digital signatures designed to be safe against quantum computers, while Solana and others are experimenting with quantum-resistant wallet designs. Some assets may be more vulnerable than others, with Bitcoin wallets that have already revealed their public keys being potential targets.
